Flushing and bathing are were our family uses the most water. Of course there are hidden wastes of water like leaks and rinsing dishes too. According to the EPA "the average American family of four uses 400 gallons of water per day. On average, approximately 70 percent of that water is used indoors, with the bathroom being the largest consumer (a toilet alone can use 27 percent!)."

The City of Greeley is joining other Colorado cities like Fort Collins and Denver for the Nationwide Challenge to be the Most WaterWise. For this challenge you are asked to take a pledge to use less water where you can. There are hundreds of prizes up for grabs.

Official Press Release:
Greeley has joined cities across the country to ask residents to make a commitment to save water in the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. The city is encouraging Greeley residents to conserve water, save energy, reduce pollution, and make a pledge to save water at mywaterpledge.com during the month of April.

Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge are entered into drawings for hundreds of prizes, including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment, and a Grand Prize Toyota Prius. The challenge also features additional resources for residents to take their commitment for conservation even further with resources and cost-saving tips. Greeley is in the 30,000 to 99,999 category, because the population categories are based on the 2010 Census.

Greeley Mayor, Tom Norton, has recorded a video that encourages residents to take the pledge. Watch the video at https://youtu.be/DHYw13BnGI8.

Last year, residents from over 3,900 cities in all 50 U.S. states pledged to reduce their annual water use by 1.5 billion gallons, reduce waste sent to landfills by 47 million pounds, and prevent more than 141,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering our watersheds. In 2012, Greeley was one of the winning cities in the Mayor’s Water Conservation Challenge.

The 5th National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is presented by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota, with support from the U.S EPA WaterSense, The Toro Company, National League of Cities, Conserva Irrigation, and Earth Friendly Products (makers of ECOS).
