On Saturday (January 24, 2015) memorabilia from Colorado’s famous recording studio and the ranch that housed it, will be auctioned off. Songs such as Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘Shining Star’, Chicago’s ‘If You Leave Me Now' and Elton John’s ‘Philadelphia Freedom’ were written and recorded at Caribou Ranch.   Take a look at some of the items up for bid-  You could take home a piece of music AND Colorado history!

In the 70s and 80s, it was the place they’d come to relax, write, and record. The beautiful wide open spaces in Nederland—The Caribou Ranch. Musicians like Elton John, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogleberg, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Chicago, Frank Zappa, The Beach Boys, America, U2, and more recorded at the ranch.

Caribou Ranch was an active recording studio for about 10 years from 1975-185. A fire in the control room in ’85 brought the recording sessions to an end.  In early January of 2015, Caribou Ranch was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

I become aware of the ranch when I first started getting into the music of the band Chicago. I found out that they recorded several albums at Caribou Ranch, and thought- “Very cool!”  This Saturday, the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will be conducting an auction of items from the ranch! Little things like a matchbook and ashtrays, to big things like a Corvette and grand pianos! The money will help to fund the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.

Billy Joel's comments on Caribou Ranch-

We were spoiled- the studio was available 24/7… We were completely out of our element- that’s what made it cool

Imagine- you could be dining on the same plates, sleeping in the same bed, or using the same saddle that Billy Joel used while he was recording his ‘Turnstiles’ album at the ranch! Get out!
