A great Fort Collins family event is on the way this weekend (April 28, 2013). The sixth annual kites in the park free kite festival offers something for everyone.

It will be held on Sunday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Spring Canyon Community Park, 2626 W. Horsetooth Rd. This free family event will feature kite flying demonstrations, contests for kids, the Recreation Summer Activities Fair, kite ballets, giant kites, kite battles, synchronized kite flying, free face painting and, of course, the free Kite Making Station. If possible, participants are asked to bike or walk to the festival, as parking is limited.

Approximately 1200 tyvek kites have been made by volunteers from the Aspen Club’s Strong Women, Strong Bones and Fossil Ridge High School in preparation for this year’s festival. Children visiting the Kite Making Station will receive a free kite that they can decorate, attach tails to, and fly. In addition, over 100 kites will be given away throughout the festival to those who win contests or drawings.

This year’s lineup features several performers who are new to Kites In the Park including The Wright Life Frisbee Demonstration Team and the Colorado Disc Dogs. Mile High Kite Club will provide demonstrations and lessons on kite flying. Returning to the festival are Mix McGraw, who holds the World Record for flying 230 kites at one time, Bob Matteo, who will launch his giant octopus, clownfish and scuba diver kites, and festival creator, John Farrell, who will perform several kite ballets.

To add to the ambiance of Kites In the Park, a myriad of vendors will be selling everything from espresso, ice cream, barbeque, Hawaiian Cuisine, Kona Ice, funnel cakes, tacos, kites and much more.
