On Saturday (April 23,2016), Fort Collins Police, and SWAT surrounded an apartment complex after a man threatened his neighbors with a knife. However, the standoff didn't turn out as they expected. According to the Coloradoan, authorities were called to the Brookview Apartments on East Stuart Street at approximately 10:26 a.m. after a man was reportedly pulling a knife on several of the tenants.

When the police arrived, based on information gathered, they believed the suspect returned to his apartment. After setting up perimeter calling out on the loudspeaker for over an hour, it was determined that the suspect, now known to be Matthew Semmel, was not in his apartment. By 2:30 p.m. the police and SWAT began to clear the area. Authorities left officers at the scene, waiting for the suspect. When Semmel returned at around 4:30 p.m., he was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of felony menacing.
