A family outing at Rockaway Beach in Oregon turned tragic this past Wednesday when a 17-year-old Fort Collins teenager was swept off his boogie board and his father died trying to rescue him.

According to the Coloradoan, Samuel Vicente Allen, a student at Rocky Mountain High School, was hit by a wave and knocked off his board. His father, Robert Joseph Allen, 50, rushed into the water to try and rescue him. Soon after, Robert was no longer visible by family members watching from the beach.

Two U.S. Coast Guard helicopters searched for the father and son and a boat crew was also in the search. Rescuers did locate Robert Allen and immediately conducted CPR. He was later pronounced dead. It was reported that both body boards were later found on shore.

The search for Samuel Allen continued throughout the night and into Thursday morning. At about 9:30 a.m., the Coast Guard had to make "the difficult decision to suspend this search". Samuel remains missing and is presumed dead.

Our hearts break for this family and they will remain in our thoughts.
