As much as we enjoy Fourth of July firework extravaganzas, it can be an incredibly stressful time for your pets. Here's a list of things to help calm your furry companion. Many pets are afraid of the booms and pows that accompany the fireworks as we celebrate our independence. Symptoms can include shaking or trembling, excessive drooling, barking, hiding, refusing to eat and in some cases, loss of bladder and bowel control. Here are some things that can help you and your pet if they are frightened.

  • Keep your pet indoors

It is a good idea to keep them in familiar surroundings during a fireworks show.

  • Drown out the sights and sounds

Close the curtains of your home and turn on the TV or radio to drown out any loud bangs and booms.

  • Use a carrier or crate

If your pet is used to being crated, try to find an area that will be the most quiet and farthest away from the loud noises, and crate them. This may provide some sense of security.

  • Talk to your vet

In extreme cases, your vet may be able to provide a sedative.

  • Take your pet out before the celebration

If your pet becomes frightened, it may prevent them from being able to relieve themselves. This can lead to accidents.
