Africa's gorgeous gems and minerals are making a special appearance in Denver this month, and you can gawk over the pretty, sparkly rocks yourself.

The Denver Gem and Mineral Show is coming to the Denver Mart in the Expo Hall on Friday, September 16, through Sunday, September 18, featuring "Minerals of Africa" as this year's theme. While the gems and minerals may not be exactly the same as those lovely polished healing crystals above, attendees can peruse displays of African gems and minerals, listen to speeches from geologists, paleontologists, and mineralogists from all over the world, explore African meteorites, and more.

No, this isn't a boring event for adults all about rocks. Fun, kid-friendly activities will also be there, including gold panning with the Gold Prospectors of Colorado, a visit with Pikes Peak Pebble Pups, and a performance from the Umoja Dance Company.

Tickets are available at the door for $12 for single-day admission for 2 people, $24 for single-day admission for a group of 4, and $15 per person for a 3-day weekend pass. Check Groupon for discounted rates.

The Denver Mart is located at 451 E 58th Avenue in Denver where event parking is free. The Denver Gem and Mineral Show runs that Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
