Emile Hirsch pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault today (August 17) stemming from an arrest made during the 2015 Sundance Film Festival during which he allegedly attacked and choked a Paramount executive.

According to Variety, the actor has been sentenced to 15 days in prison and is required to pay a $4,750 fine as well as perform 50 hours of community service. The charge will reportedly be dismissed upon completion of his sentence.

The Associated Press says Hirsch apologized for his actions, which reportedly included putting Daniele Bernfeld in a chokehold and throwing her across a table and onto the floor. He said he was heavily intoxicated at the time, but recognizes that there is no sufficient excuse for his actions.

Hirsch said, "I know it was completely wrong and reckless and irresponsible. I have no excuses for not remembering. I put those chemicals inside me."

Bernfeld said in a statement read in court that the physical altercation resulted in longterm effects that extend well beyond the bodily harm she suffered. She said, "It took two people to pull him off me, and if not for their intervention, the attack would have continued. I thought I was going to die."

She is disappointed with Hirsch's light sentence, saying, "If a violent attack in front of a roomful of witnesses can be labeled a misdemeanor and dismissed, what of women who are assaulted while alone in hallways or bathrooms, or behind the closed doors of their own homes?"

But attorney Robert Hilder says Hirsch has accepted responsibility for the attack and his willingness to attend rehab following the incident shows remorse. He said, "That was a terrifying experience. I don't think we could have given enough jail to satisfy her."

Hirsch maintains that he doesn't know what sparked the attack, but he's since been ordered to abstain from drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
