DIY Wood Mallet

I have spent a large portion of my time over the past few weeks in my garage working on my dining room table. There have been some moments of down time as glue needs to dry or I am a little overworked on a certain part. I want to take my time and do it right, so there is a bit of waiting involved. I don’t do well with waiting and I need something to keep me occupied while the glue cures.

I recently went to an estate sale and found some scrap wood that the seller was kind enough to just give me instead of paying for the small cut offs. I decided to make use of them and make something. The large dead blow hammer I have been using for chisel work is a bit much and needed something smaller. Instead of going out to buy a new mallet, I decided to make one! I used three types of wood to make the mallet head. Only one of which I am sure of the species, which is maple. The outer section I believe is red oak and the inner bands, well, I am at a loss. I think it came out pretty well and cannot wait to add some mineral oil to the mallet head to see the grain come out!

I still need to make a handle for the mallet and then we will see how well it will work for what I need it to do… If all else fails, I have a new meat tenderizer!
