I spent last night watching a little college football. The University of Montana was hosting Northern Iowa in the FCS quarterfinals. It wasn't close. The Grizzlies dominated the Panthers from the start giving Montana a 48-10 win, and setting up a potential Montana vs. Montana State rematch next week in the semifinals, if MSU can win today.

I forget who it was, but in the post game press conference one of the Montana Grizzly players was asked why he thought things had turned out the way they did. His response, “I just thank God for helping us advance today. He has been with us every step of the way.

What?

First of all, I doubt God had “Montana or Northern Iowa?” on his to-do list last night. Rumor has it he was too busy trying to help us figure out how to stop killing each other in random, senseless shootings on university campuses.

And even if he did have time for the game, do we really think he’d take sides? Does God really hate Iowa that much?

Athletes and fans do this all the time, and we’re very serious about it. Fans on the floor praying their team makes the last second overtime field goal. Players in the locker room before the game praying for God to help them get the important win.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say, God doesn’t care who wins. Stop asking him to help your team. He doesn’t like the Rams more than the Buffaloes, the Broncos more than the Raiders (ok, maybe that’s a bad example), Tiger Woods more than Phil Mickelson. And even if he would nudge the puck over the line if you prayed real hard, is that how you really want to be using your prayer energy? I’m just sayin’…

I would like to add one more thing. God, if you’re reading this, and I have it all wrong; please work some kind of miracle that would give the Vikings a Super Bowl win sometime in the next twenty years. I would really, really, really love for them to win that thing. Amen.
