Colorado has a very strong cycling community, but Friday morning they lost one of their members.  A man was cycling along Highway 85, just as the sun was coming up, around 7 am.  Police say the rider drifted into oncoming traffic. The cyclist was struck by a semi and killed.

Cycling can be very dangerous. Most of the time it’s because drivers don’t pay enough attention. Not to say that the semi driver in this instance was at fault; it’s just that in general, cyclists are at high risk if they are out on a public road.  There’s advice out there that states you should ride in pairs; this way you’ll be easier to spot by people driving.  You could also make the argument that if this cyclist had had another person riding with him, that person might have given him the ‘heads-up’ that he was in danger.

It’s important to have fun and get some exercise, but it’s also important to stay safe once you hit the road.  If you ride, what do you do to ensure your safety?
