The mother, who said she was a victim of domestic violence, took her 1-year-old daughter to the lobby of the Prince George's County Police Department because she had nowhere else to go - until Cpl. Che' Atkinson changed that.

After noticing the homeless woman, who was not identified, sitting in the lobby of the District I station in Hyattsville on Wednesday morning, Atkinson arranged for a distant relative to pick the pair up and take them in.

It would be at least one more day before the relative could arrive, however - so Atkinson rented a hotel room for the woman and her child and brought them food and drinks. The gesture was documented and shared on Facebook by Atkinson's superiors at the police department.

Atkinson told WUSA9 he had the extra money and decided it would be best to put them up for a night to make sure they're safe.

"This is a helpless child so it's our duty to help and that child was definitely in need," he said.

Below are photos of Cpl. Che' Atkinson preparing to take the mother and daughter to the hotel.
