A Colorado mother is upset that her five-year-old daughter was stopped by a teacher, and not allowed to finish a part of her lunch. Leeza Pearson, of Aurora, was surprised by her daughter when he came home from her school, the Children's Academy, with her Oreos and a note from her teacher. The note from her teacher read:

"Dear Parents, it is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. This is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable and a heavy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone's participation."

According to 9 News, the child told her mother that she was not allowed to eat her cookies during lunch, because the "don't have enough nutritional value." The girl mother does realize that cookies don't hold "nutritional value," however, she has pointed out that her daughter did also have a ham and cheese sandwich and string cheese along with the cookies.

The director of the Children's Academy, Brenda Dean, is investigating why the teacher felt that they needed to stop the student from finishing her lunch, and why they felt compelled to send home a note.

Dean stated, "it is not school policy to tell parents what children can or can't eat for lunch. She plans to speak to the teacher to find out the situation." She also acknowledged, that even though it is school policy to promote healthy eating, it is the parents responsibility to execute it.

Pearson feels that this may be just the tip of a greater issue, stating, "What the school thinks is healthy for her is not what I think is healthy for her. She needs to eat what she's going to eat. That's between me and her and our doctor, not the school."
