There are many perils in being the first on the scene.

Whether it's a fire, an accident, or another incident that requires police, fire or emergency staff, if they show up, something has gone sideways. Their lives are often in danger. They have such a sense of duty that risking their lives is a regular thing for them.

However, if they don't need to, then they shouldn't have to. Technology is going to serve our first responders well, as drones are starting to be used in firefighting and other applications that can help to keep people in uniform out of harm's way.

There are so many ways they can use the drone. If an obstruction prevents them from seeing a roof, or a stranded climber like the ones that were stuck on the Flatirons this week. They could use it to inspect roofs that are on fire.

Right now, the South Metro Fire Department is using them mainly for training purposes. In the future, if a drone can put eyes on something that would normally put a firefighter in danger, they'll be ready.
