Temperatures soared to a high of 95 in Loveland on Wednesday, following a statewide pattern of extra hot and dry — or perfect swimming weather.

However, two area swim beaches are off limits for beating the heat.

Higher-than-normal E. coli levels temporarily closed Boyd Lake’s swim beach on Wednesday, six days after low water levels shut down Lake Loveland swim beach.

Carter Lake and Horsetooth Reservoir, west of Loveland and Fort Collins respectively, remain open for swimmers with near full water levels, and trading concrete for sand, the waters of Winona Pool are expected to remain open through September.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment require all lakes and reservoirs to test weekly for dangerous bacteria levels. This week, Boyd Lake’s test came back with unsafe E. coli levels, closing the beach until now daily tests come back safe.

Officials do not know when that will be.
