The City of Fort Collins is committed to helping us reduce, reuse and recycle. The most important 'R' word there is 'Reduce'. Reducing makes reusing and recycling unnecessary, as it often prevents us from taking things, therefore they won't have to be disposed of or made into something else. But what happens when we don't even want the things that are being sent to us?

When it comes to junk mail, there is something that can be done.

Similar to a 'no-call' list, residents of Fort Collins can take advantage of a service that will help to stop junk mail from specific companies. It can be stopped on a partial basis, or altogether.

I spoke with Susie Gordon, Senior Environmental Planner with the City of Fort Collins about the new program.

I think all of us get a tremendous amount of junk mail. According to the EPA it's 5 million tons of junk mail per year and out of that only 40% is going to get recycled.

The program can be implemented in a few ways. You can go to the city's website to take care of it. There is also a mobile app (read our article here) that allows you to snap a photo, send it off and it will stop mail from that company.
