For over 100 years, all Budweiser beer has been brewed with the same strain of yeast that Anheuser-Busch has been keeping alive since the late 1800s. This way, each beer that’s created tastes just like it did way back then. To do so, they keep a pretty tight cap on that strain.  Very tight.

It’s good to know that when you pass away, you can rest assured, knowing that not only your kids- but THEIR kids and THEIR grandkids as well, will be able to taste the same Bud Light.  CNN Money did an interview with the person/scientist in charge of ‘The Strain.’  It’s held in St. Louis.

They hold samples of the strain in a cryogenic chamber. Weekly, they take out just one milliliter of the strain to produce 100 barrels of fresh yeast. Those 100 barrels are shipped out to their breweries, like the one in Fort Collins, to make Budweiser, Bud Light, Bud Light Lime and other beer products.

The strain samples that they keep in cryogenic storage in St Louis, are backed up by their ‘mother’ strains. Those mother strains are so important, that they are way underground in St Louis, in a chamber that even the CEO of the Anheuser-Busch themselves doesn’t have credentials to access to. That guy must be bummed. All that money he’s making, and he can’t go down to the bunker.

And what about this ONE person who’s the only one with access?  What kind of power trips do you think she goes on: “Oh, Martin, you wouldn’t mind washing my car- that is unless you want your great-great-great- granddaughter’s sorority party to be… a bust?’

I guess we’ll just have to hope she doesn’t freak out.

Speaking of beer, bunkers and freaking out…. I came across this GREAT video about how A-B’s Shock Top held an ‘End of The World’ party.  Epic!
