Bob Seger has posted a free track titled "Glenn Song" to honor his old friend Glenn Frey on the one-year anniversary of his death.

The song, which is available to stream or download at Seger's official site, was recorded last fall — and although new music from Seger is always an event for fans, he knew it wasn't the type of track that would end up for sale. As he told Rolling Stone, "Glenn Song" was a personal statement rooted in his decades of friendship with the Eagles co-founder.

"It's obviously not meant to be a hit," Seger pointed out. "There's no chorus per se or title section or anything. The idea was just to honor his memory and talk, very specifically, about my impression of him in 1966 when we first met."

Seger was among the first to offer tributes to Frey after his sudden death last Jan. 18, recalling their 50-year friendship and stressing a side to the star often hidden by his occasionally combative public persona. "He was a great kid. I always kind of thought of him as my baby brother, a little bit," Seger said at the time. "He was f—ing brilliant. He was a joy to be around. I always looked forward to seeing him. It was always memorable. He had an amazing sense of humor and was just smart, whip-smart."

According to Seger, the "Glenn Song" session was quick — just a couple of takes, par for the course in Nashville — and although he wasn't aiming for the heartstrings, his love for Frey, coupled with lyrics like "When I think about you I always smile / You were strong / You were sharp / But you had the deepest heart" are bound to provoke a strong reaction in fans and loved ones.

"I hope 'Glenn Song' doesn't make his wife Cindy cry," he added. "But it probably will."
