We were lucky enough to enjoy a weekend at Grand Lake. It has been a few years since I've been through Rocky Mountain National Park. The amount of trees being killed and turning brown from beetle kill is astonishing. Grand County is being especially hard hit and in several areas over half the trees you could see were dead. The forest is starting to look messy from all the fallen trees and branches. It's weird.

According to National Park Service "Periodic outbreaks of native bark beetles have occurred throughout the history of the park. However, none have been as severe as the recent outbreak. Though bark beetles cause a substantial loss of trees, they are recognized as part of "natural conditions."
