Being A Good Neighbor (Why State Farm & Mr. Rogers Are Right)
I heard someone complaining yesterday about how fast Northern Colorado is growing, and how it is losing it’s small-ish town appeal. (Which I don’t agree with.) I mean it is growing, but it’s still one of the best places on the planet. I’m not a NoCO cheerleader, I’m a guy that just got back from a week in Minneapolis. It’s easy to forget how good we have it here.
The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions: Achievers Exit Here
I was watching a TV show last night, and one of the characters was talking about his dislike of the saying, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” His point was that at least you’re trying to do good things. He wondered; if you end up in hell for trying to do good things, where did you end up if you just set out to do bad things?
Focus Is Good (As Long As We’re Focused On The Right Thing)
I have been busy airport hopping this week. Why do we spend so much time, money, and effort on airport security? I understand the horror of 9/11, but we seem to have over-focused on one piece of an enormous pie. What about the unlimited number of other ways America could be terrorized? Focus is a good thing, unless it blinds us to all other possibilities. Sometimes we need to set the pencil down a
Lightning Strikes In Overtime, Broncos Beat Steelers
Lightning struck on the first play of overtime yesterday afternoon in a sold out Mile High Stadium, when Tim Tebow connected with Demaryius Thomas to lock up a Denver Broncos (9-8) 29-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-5) in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Next up for the Broncos are the new England Patriots, this Saturday in Foxboro (6:00pm MT, CBS).
Let’s Be Frank: Being Great Takes Hard Work
My wife and I lead a pretty exciting life. On Friday night’s we usually come home, make a couple of cocktails, and clean the house. If that’s not enough excitement for us, we might even throw in a couple loads of laundry. We like doing this because the weekend is then free of all these little tasks.
Are You Crazy Enough To Do Something That’s NOT Your Job? (I Hope So)
I stopped to use the bathroom in a small store yesterday. I was running errands, and needed a little pit-stop. There was only one stall, so choosing wasn’t difficult. I walked in, closed the door and bam, no toilet paper on the roll. There were however two new rolls sitting on top of the toilet. Apparently the last occupant felt as though it was my job to change the roll. Who does that? (I’m afrai
Extra, Extra: Ignore Change And Become Irrelevant
A while back I stopped at the store on the way home from work to grab some beer. (Which will come as a surprise to absolutely no one.) There was a table out front with a nice man sitting at it. He had a clip board and some pens on the table, and a big sign propped up behind him that read, “Sign up to receive the newspaper for FREE for 60 days, and get $10 in FREE groceries.” What!?!
The World Depends On Your Happiness (No Pressure)
I have been spending the last few days with my parents in Minneapolis. When I was growing up, my dad used to corner me (and likely my brother & sister too) and force me to have meaningful discussions. Meaning of life kind of stuff. Of course all we wanted to do was escape, and sink back in to an episode of Tom & Jerry, or a game of football in the yard with friends.
There’s No Shortcut To Staying Relevant
The world is changing. Now wait a minute. Take it easy. I didn’t say the sky is falling, I said the world is changing. And that, by the way, is nothing new. It is however changing at a lightning-fast pace. It’s the digital revolution brothers and sisters. Social media, technology, traditional media, and communication are different today than they were just yesterday. Imagine what tomorrow will bri
Broncos Lose, But Reach Playoffs For First Time Since 2005
The Denver Broncos (8-8) lost 7-3 at Mile High this afternoon to Kyle Orton and the visiting Kansas City Chiefs (7-9). However, the Oakland Raiders (8-8) lost 38-26 to the San Diego Chargers (8-8), crowning the Broncos as the AFC West Champions, ensuring Denver their first playoff appearance since 2005.
Happy New Year: What Are Your Goals For 2012?
I had lunch with a friend last week who recently asked her kids what their goals were. Her 12-year old son said, “What are you talking about?” Her 15-year old daughter responded, “Mom, you’re always putting so much pressure on me,” and stormed out of the room. We laughed and she asked if that made her a bad parent.
Sometimes ‘No Good Reason’ Is A Good Reason
Education is good. Knowledge is good. Experience is good. Planning is good. A mentor is good. Street smarts are good. Advice is good. Common sense is good. Research is good. And yes, (drum roll) sometimes ignorance is bliss. Ok, maybe not ignorance…but faith, intuition, gut, or feeling.
