“Apollo 18:” Cliché Horror Flick or Something More? [VIDEO]

Yesterday, I was surfing the Internet looking for interesting movie trailers (as I often do), when I came across the debut trailer for Apollo 18.  Check it out below!

Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego in his first Engligh language project, Apollo 18 centers on the idea that Apollo 17 was not, in fact, the last mission to the moon sent by NASA.  Apparently, another mission was sent; but something horrific and unexplained happened, and the mission had to be covered up and hidden from the public…UNTIL NOW!

This appears to be a “found footage” style film, similar to Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project.  In the past, I’ve found this style of filmmaking to be very effective in building suspense, thrills and chills where traditional horror movies can tend to fall short.  Limited angles and the complete absence of a musical score make the film scarier, because it feels real.

My only hope is that Apollo 18 doesn’t simply attempt to bank on past successes.  The last thing I want is to see this intriguing new style of filmmaking descend into the mediocrity, drowned by tireless repetition of everything that makes it unique, until it is nothing more than cliché.

So, here’s hoping.  I love horror movies, and I love outer space, so I’ll definitely be seeing this one.  What could possibly go wrong?  (Answer: A lot. But we’ll just have to wait and see!)
