I just saw Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and one of my favorite characters was the villain Edward Teach, A.K.A. Blackbeard.  I loved that he was this film's bad guy, because Blackbeard was a real person, and one of the most infamous real-life pirates of all time.  It seems fitting then that, right on the cusp of the movie's release, scientists have recovered an anchor from the real Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge!

According to the Associated Press, the anchor is over 11 feet long, with arms that measure over seven and a half feet across.  It was likely the main anchor used for the ship, and is the third-largest artifact found in the wreckage off the coast of North Carolina.  It weighs between 2,500 and 3,000 pounds!

North Carolina hopes museum exhibits of the artifacts from the Queen Anne's Revenge will promote tourism.  Scientists and divers hope to recover all artifacts from the wreckage by 2013.
