An additional 4.89 million cars are being recalled by Honda as they are possibly equipped with faulty airbags. The airbag woes continue from 2008 as 11.4 million vehicles have had airbag recalls since that year.

According to Honda, the recall covers 14 models produced between 2002 and 2008, including the Civic and CR-V ranges.

Fear of the airbags exploding and sending shrapnel at drivers and passengers is the cause of the recall, with over 10 separate recalls occurring over the issues related to the safety devices.

Takata, who is the manufacturer of the airbags and one of the worlds largest airbag companies, first noticed problems with the design a decade ago after noticing the chemical mix had issues. At least five deaths have since been linked to the company's malfunctioning airbags.

The Honda recall comes a day after both Nissan and Toyota both had similar recalls due to the airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already fining Takata $14,000 a day due to the delay in getting the issues resolved.
