2014 was a great year.

We had to lick our wounds from some of the things that happened in 2012 and 2013, but other than that, things went really well for Fort Collins and northern Colorado in 2014.

Here are some of the things we can anticipate with a smile in 2015.

Stadium Construction Begins in Earnest

Hughes Stadium (pictured above) is now defunct.

According to the Coloradoan, construction cannot begin until fall of 2015, but the building of the stadium which Colorado State President Tony Frank hopes will be ready for the 2017 football season will create buzz from now until it opens. The western border of campus on Shields Street in Fort Collins is about to start looking a lot different.

For 2015, it will probably be more discussion, articles, Facebook posts and water cooler talk than digging and building, but there is a lot to be done to have a stadium ready for glory in 2 years.

Old Town Square Renovation

Back in 2010, I DJ'd a party in Old Town Square, and we got down like it was 1985. It was the 25 year anniversary of Old Town Square in its current iteration.

Apparently, it's time for a facelift. Construction on Old Town Square will start soon, and should be finished by late summer or early fall 2015.

Fort Collins was on the national stage in 2013 for one of the world's biggest bike races, and rave reviews came from that. In 2015 it will be back, thanks to strong efforts by the cities of Northern Colorado and organizations like Visit Fort Collins. It is not only exciting to have such a big event in town, but it also give the landscape and people of Northern Colorado major national TV exposure.

The New Foothills

Much effort has been put towards enriching the south end of town. Likewise, the north, from Old Town to Jax has been seeing improvements. The middle section, like so many middle children, may have felt left out. No longer. The new mall takes out the old and brings in the new, featuring indoor and outdoor shopping, and an overall revitalization of the whole area that stretches from the new Sierra Trading Post at Horsetooth and College to the East Swallow Road.

Colorado State Sports

The women's volleyball team will collect another Mountain West Championship Ring as a result of their stellar play in 2014. They advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals and next year, the team could be even better.

A new era starts in Rams Football with new Coach Mike Bobo. Jim McElwain's depature was unexpected, but may be the biggest thing that happened to the program since Sonny Lubick, and until the new stadium is erected.

But, sooner than later, we are hoping Larry Eustachy's Rams Basketball team makes headlines in March and April. They started the season as strong as anyone in college basketball, and should be expected to make the March Madness tournament again this year.

What excites you about the coming year?
