Bruno Mars is the curator of the Super Bowl 50's halftime show.

A curator is an overseer. A manager. But more than that, they are a person in charge of implementing a vision.

With the upcoming Super Bowl, simply asking "What band did they get?" isn't the right way of looking at what the NFL and other forces entertainment hope will be a true experience.

That's the ultimate goal in art and entertainment, right? To leave the audience with a feeling like they've just had an amazing experience?

Well, the Super Bowl Halftime show has yet to do that for me. However, Bruno Mars has come as close as any act in history. I think he is a great choice for this job. This is why.

1. He's got the look that look transcends generations

Even if he's not the focal point, the way Bruno Mars looks shows that he understands how to have the best modern style with a touch of classic history. He knows that just about everybody appreciates suit jackets and ties. Most men look pretty good in suit jackets and ties. And five men all wearing the same suit jackets and ties, dancing the same steps in sync, and playing and singing chart topping songs is lighting in a bottle.

The look of Bruno Mars band (circa 2010 to present)  includes everyone, from grandma to the kids. It worked last year, and it will continue to work forever.

Not that the upcoming Super Bowl needs to have that button-up Motown look, because it doesn't. It's just good that the curator knows how to use the power of classic style, and that it is important to appeal to a wide audience.

He's a killer

Pop performance is competitive, and if I had to put my money on who is the best out there right now, working today, creating new music and touring in support of it, from what I've seen, it would be a knock down, drag out battle to the death between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. They both have the chops to back the hype. They both have the pipes that give us pause. They are practiced and they care about how great they are.

Plus, they both have an incredible artistic sensibility, realizing that they have to push their audience's limits while still making their offerings accessible for our enjoyment.

In this area, the only reason Bruno is a better choice than Lady Gaga is because Gaga is probably just a bit too weird for the solid middle of the road footing that the American Super Bowl has to stay on.

And, I mean that as a complement to her, and him.

The point; Katy Perry is good, Taylor is terrific, and Justin is justified, but they are dim in the huge shadow cast by the performance ability of Bruno Mars.

He understands the build and the drop

Watch the video. Watch the arc of excitement he creates. Watch where he places what element of the show.

The kids chorus brings the 2001:A Space Oddysey feeling of "Get ready for something huge!" Then, he kills the crowd by surprising it. I didn't know he could drum. And he does just enough with the drum solo. There is a fine line to walk when playing any solo, and he doesn't make us wait for a transition. By the time he was three minutes in, I had already been very impressed by what I'd seen about five times.

The point is, he filled his 12 minutes with about as much entertainment as we could handle, playing songs that made us want to dance, rock and swoon. The performance had emotional range and perfect placement of the elements that he and the Red Hot Chili Peppers executed.

Overall, Bruno Mars seems to not only have the ability, but also the sensibility, the timing and the vision that might make it the best Super Bowl Halftime show we've seen since...Bruno Mars.
