Are You a Facebook Narcissist? [VIDEO, STUDY, POLL]

Jeff/Godfrey

A new study shows that people with many Facebook friends could be narcissistic. Is this you? First, in case you don’t know what that means, here’s how Wikipedia describes it.

In everyday speech, “narcissism” often means egoism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. In psychology, the term is used to describe both normal self-love and unhealthy self-absorption due to a disturbance in the sense of self.

So, in general, to be narcissistic means that you are way too into yourself. This study implies that people that have many friends (I have over 1,400) are leaning that way.

“Facebook gives those with narcissistic tendencies the opportunity to exploit the site to get the feedback they need and become the center of attention.”

I have always believed that Facebook’s greatest draw is to give everyone a public platform to show off their lives. Remember being invited over to your friends for dinner after their trip to some exotic locale and being forced to endure hours of photos and stories? Those people now just create photo albums. For that, we say “Thank you Facebook!”

So, am I a narcissist because of my 1,4o0+ friends? Well, I think that question about me may have been out there before Facebook came along. Many in my profession suffer from the plight of an inflated sense of self importance.
